Illustration should be: playful, joyful & ever-evolving

I often read, especially on social media, that artists should stick to one niche, medium or style, but I don’t subscribe to that viewpoint for three reasons:

  • I’m a firm believer in creating what feels right for you

  • Exploring different materials and styles exercises the artistic muscles & creative synapses in the brain, so you’re constantly learning & evolving in your practice

  • Prospective clients like to see that you can be adaptable & versatile

Making art like these illustrations taps in to the child-like part of me that has never really gone away.

When I was young, my biggest fear about grown up was that, one day, I would have to stop playing.

But you never have to stop playing - especially with art. It’s what keeps artists’ fire alight…just ask Julia Cameron! Her Artists’ Way is so popular partly because it asks you to nurture that creative child within you :)

(Secret: I have children’s colouring crayons and they create just as acceptable artwork as the most expensive oils…it’s about how, and why, you use your chosen medium.
